IOU Calculation for 2D Quadrilaterals The major functional components of autonomous vehicles are perception, control, planning, system management, and localization. Perception is a process that senses the surrounding environment using various sensors like Radars, LiDARs, Ultrasonic and Cameras sensors. Sensors are designed to extract information from the environment and hence, to perceive the surroundings. • Lidars are used to extract the information on the position and shape of surrounding obstacles within its range and field of view (FOV). • Camera sensor data provides information about the object class. • Radars are used to derive the position and velocity of the obstacles and so on. Multi-sensor fusion integrates the sequence of observations from a number of heterogeneous sensors into a single best estimate of the state of the environment. One of the Sensor Fusion outputs is the IOU (Intersection over Union) or Jaccard index during the object detection. When the object detection is performed through more than one source of sensors (such as Ultrasonic and Camera sensors), the IOU or Jaccard index is calculated to quantify the percent overlap from two different sources of sensors. The basic problem in multi-sensor fusion systems is to integrate a sequence of observations from a number of different sensors into a single best estimate of the state of the environment. In such a case, the IOU helps to identify the overlap area, which is captured from the multi-sensors. For example for the Autonomous Parking Functionality of ADAS (Autonomous Driving Assistance System), the Ultrasonic and Camera sensors are capturing the free space for Ego Vehicle Parking (as shown in the below figure). As per the capability and mounting position of different sensors, the available parking space is captured. The captured area from different sensors may or may not be the same. In that case, the IOU or Jaccard Index helps to quantify the overlap area detected by two different sensors. Figure 1: Practical use case of IOU The IOU or Jaccard Index is calculated as follows: Figure 2: IOU Calculation The IOU (Intersection over Union) value varies between 0 to 1. More the overlap region better the IOU value. Henceforth the confidence in the input data from the sensors increases. Lower the IOU, troubles in deciding the available space for the parking as different sensors are showing different spaces for parking. Figure 3: Confidence decision based on IOU Note: Decision of the High Confidence from calculated IOU value varies from application to application. For example, in some applications, High Confidence can be decided over 0.8 IOU value whereas, in some other applications, High Confidence can be decided over 0.9 IOU value. The IOU calculation can be done over the images or coordinates captured from the different sensors. In addition, the IOU calculation can also be performed considering the captured object as a 2D or 3D object. In this article, I have focused on the IOU calculation based on coordinates received from two different sensors. The captured coordinates would be of 2D Quadrilateral. Refer to the MATLAB Code for the Calculation of IOU using the X and Y coordinates captured from the two different sensors. The point of interest here is in finding the intersection points and identifying the quadrilateral vertices that lie inside another quadrilateral. Radar is an object detection system which uses radio waves to determine the range, altitude, direction, or speed of objects. It can be used to detect aircraft, ships, spacecraft, guided missiles, motor vehicles, weather formations, and terrain. The radar dish or antenna transmits pulses of radio waves or micro waves which bounce off any object in their path. The object returns a tiny part of the wave's energy to a dish or antenna which is usually located at the same site as the transmitter. The modern uses of radar are highly diverse, including air traffic control, radar astronomy, air-defense systems, antimissile systems ;marine radar start locate landmarks and other ships; aircraft anti-collision systems; ocean surveillance systems, outer space surveillance and rendezvous systems; meteorological precipitation monitoring; altimetry and flight control systems; guided missile target locating systems; and ground-penetrating radar for geological observations. Radar(Radio Detection And Ranging) is an object detection system which uses radio waves to determine the range, altitude, direction, or speed of objects. Now, the radar is rotating 180 degrees and calculating the distance away from the ultrasonic sensor. It is sending the data (angle and distance) to the computer using serial port. Processing application is converting the polar to rectangular coordinates and showing them on screen. Ultrasonic system is the most useful and widely used system in the RADAR communication, and the object detector as well as it mostly used in SONAR system. (i.e. to measure the depth of sea) It is wireless technology and the wave are used in the communication are not hazardous to human being. In this project we deal with the issues of pertain to the subject such as object detection distance measurement. Here we present the ultrasonic radar system which is very useful in object detection as well as distance measurement.

AeroShield is a Smart Air Defense System powered by ESP32, featuring radar-based object tracking, signal jamming via D.Aouth, and a secure password-protected door lock. The radar detects objects using ultrasonic sensors and sends Bluetooth alerts, while the door lock operates through an I2C keypad and servo motor.
The proposed system aims to achieve accident analysis by objectively tracking what occurs in vehicles. The system also involves enhancement of security by preventing tampering of the Black Box data. In addition, the Black Box sends an alert message to a pre-stored mobile number via Short Message Service (SMS) in the case of occurrence of an accident. The proposed system makes use of 5 sensors to record the various driving data parameters. Arduino controller is used to regulate these sensors. The data received from the sensors are stored onto the thingspeak server over ESP8266 for data retrieval anywhere and at anytime. The system uses Global Positioning System (GPS) to collect location data. Apart from the accident analysis by objectively tracking what occurs in vehicles, the proposed system sends short message indicating the position of vehicle by GPS system to family member, Emergency medical service (EMS) and nearest hospital so that first aid can be provided as early as possible. It may also adapt speed “Adaptive cruise control” (ACC; also called autonomous cruise control, radar cruise control, traffic-aware cruise control or dynamic radar cruise control) is an optional cruise control system for road vehicles that automatically adjusts the vehicle speed to maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead). Control is based on sensor information from on-board sensors. In our project we have made use of ultrasonic sensors. It detects the distance of object ahead and calculate its velocity and will try to maintain the set speed and set distance in correspondence with the car ahead.
